If you want to get great at what you're writing now, read great writing that's way different
Always shop for quality, but let your peripheral vision sweep the proverbial bookshelf. Don't skip even the obscurest genres.
In fact, the more "out of your wheelhouse" it feels, the more helpful it may be.
That's not to say stop reading the kind of things you're writing. But you'll likely keep doing that without really trying.
But the truly excellent article or novella you never thought to read, that takes conscious hunting. And that'll kick up the type of lateral, left-field thinking that could be your next breakthrough or godsend of inspiration.
